Where RDR2 stands on current consoles

Red Dead Redemption 2 was released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 26, 2018, and on PC on November 5, 2019. On PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, it runs through backward compatibility, as the previous-generation version. On consoles, it is limited to 30 frames per second. Rockstar has never announced a native version for current consoles.

The precedent: Red Dead Redemption in December 2025

On November 13, 2025, Rockstar announced Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, iOS, Android and Netflix's mobile catalogue. The release followed on December 2, 2025, 19 days after the announcement. On PS5 and Xbox Series, the game runs at 60 frames per second, in up to 4K, with HDR. Owners of the earlier console versions received the upgrade for free.

What insiders have said, in order

  • October 2025: Rockstar changed the description of RDR2's Steam page for the first time in more than five years, as RDR2.org noted. The same month, Reece "Kiwi Talkz" Reilly reported conversations with developers about a current-gen version, without a release date.
  • November 2025: after the Red Dead Redemption announcement, the insider NateTheHate said the plans for RDR2 "remain active", according to RDR2.org.
  • January 2026: Kiwi Talkz denied having confirmed a release in late 2027, and described the earlier comments as "educated guesses".
  • February 2026: asked whether the release had slipped to 2027, NateTheHate replied: "As far as I know, RDR2 is this year" (reported by Insider Gaming on February 6).
  • April 26, 2026: Rockstar repaired the media section of RDR2's official website, using an image viewer similar to the one on the GTA VI site. The game itself did not change.
  • June 29, 2026: Kiwi Talkz posted that the version exists "for a fact", and that the developers in India working on it do not set the date.

What has not happened

Rockstar and Take-Two have not announced a current-gen version of Red Dead Redemption 2. None of the statements above comes from either company. In July 2026, GamingBible wrote that "it's about time we accepted that Red Dead Redemption 2 might never receive a new-gen update". Rockstar's release calendar is now built around Grand Theft Auto VI, due on November 19, 2026.
