After the feud in Lemoyne, the Van der Linde gang takes over Shady Belle, an abandoned plantation house in the swamp, and moves on the city of Saint Denis to recover Jack Marston. Chapter 4 is the story's city chapter, and its turning point: the gang gets the boy back, Dutch murders a crime lord, and a bank robbery ends in disaster.

Full spoilers for Chapter 4 of Red Dead Redemption 2 follow.

Setting: Shady Belle and the city

The gang makes its new camp at Shady Belle, a decaying mansion in the Bayou Nwa. Nearby is Saint Denis, a large, industrial river city modelled on New Orleans, with streetcars, gas lamps and electric light. After chapters spent in the open country, the story moves into a modern city where the gang's frontier outlawry looks increasingly out of time.

The Van der Linde gang meeting Angelo Bronte in his Saint Denis mansion
Dutch and the gang meet Angelo Bronte, the crime lord who controls Saint Denis.

Recovering Jack from Angelo Bronte

In "Angelo Bronte, a Man of Honor", Dutch and Arthur visit the mansion of Angelo Bronte, the crime lord who runs Saint Denis and who was sold Jack Marston at the end of Chapter 3. Bronte returns the boy unharmed in exchange for a job, and Jack is reunited with John and Abigail.

The death of Kieran Duffy

The gang's war with the O'Driscolls follows them to Shady Belle. Kieran Duffy, the former O'Driscoll who had earned a place in the camp, is captured and beheaded by his old gang, his body sent riding into camp to open an ambush. It is a brutal reminder that the feud is far from over.

The killing of Angelo Bronte

Distrusting Bronte, the gang turns on him. In "Revenge is a Dish Best Eaten", they abduct him from his mansion, and Dutch drowns him and feeds his body to an alligator. The murder is a turning point: it is the clearest sign yet that Dutch's judgement is failing, and it unsettles even Hosea and Arthur.

Dutch kills Angelo Bronte, a sign of his growing instability.

The Saint Denis bank robbery

The chapter builds to the gang's biggest score: robbing the Lemoyne National Bank in "Banking, the Old American Art". It is a trap. Agent Milton and the Pinkertons surround the bank, and the robbery collapses into a running gunfight. Lenny Summers is shot and killed during the escape, and Milton executes Hosea Matthews in the street in front of Arthur. The survivors flee to the docks and stow away on a ship, which is wrecked at sea, stranding them far from home.

Key characters

Chapter 4 introduces the crime lord Angelo Bronte and brings the Pinkerton Agent Milton to the front of the story. It also kills three gang members: Kieran Duffy, Lenny Summers and, most devastatingly, Hosea Matthews. Arthur, Dutch, John, Bill and Javier survive to be shipwrecked.
