Hosea Matthews

Died 1899 Deceased Gang co-founder Voiced by Curzon Dobell

Hosea Matthews is the co-founder of the Van der Linde gang and, for more than twenty years, Dutch van der Linde's closest friend, right-hand man and conscience. A master con artist and silver-tongued gentleman thief, Hosea is the brain behind the gang's biggest scores, and the calm hand that keeps Dutch's wilder impulses in check.

Alongside Dutch, he helped raise Arthur Morgan and John Marston, and his steady wisdom is one of the last things holding the gang together as 1899 begins. He was voiced by Curzon Dobell.

Biography

From the stage to the con

Hosea once dreamed of life as a stage actor before drifting into petty crime, where his gift for performance made him a formidable confidence man. By the time he met Dutch van der Linde, decades before the events of Red Dead Redemption 2, the two recognised kindred spirits, and together they founded the gang that would carry Dutch's name.

The brain of the gang

For over twenty years, Hosea was the planner: the man who scouted the marks, ran the long cons and talked the gang out of as many fights as Dutch talked them into. He and Dutch raised a string of orphans and outlaws, including a young Arthur Morgan and John Marston, shaping the gang into a family.

Bessie, and a life almost lived

At one point Hosea left the outlaw life to settle down with a woman named Bessie, the love of his life. The two married and tried to live honestly, but after Bessie died, a grieving Hosea returned to the gang for good. Her loss left a quiet sadness in him that never fully lifted.

1899: the beginning of the end

By 1899 Hosea is ageing and unwell, but still the gang's sharpest mind. As Dutch grows reckless after Blackwater, Hosea's warnings carry more weight than ever, and are heeded less and less.

Personality

Where Dutch inspires, Hosea reasons. Warm, witty and endlessly perceptive, he is the gang's diplomat and its moral anchor, more interested in clever schemes than in bloodshed. He treats Arthur and John like sons and speaks plainly when others flatter.

His tragedy is that he sees the gang's doom coming and cannot stop it. As long as Hosea is alive, Dutch listens; once he is gone, there is no one left who can.

Another of his surrogate sons, raised in the gang under Hosea's patient guidance.

Micah Bell

The newcomer Hosea openly distrusts, rightly seeing him as a destabilising influence on Dutch.

Bill Williamson

One of the gang's enforcers, a loyal if blunt instrument that Hosea's planning keeps pointed in the right direction.

Death and fate

During the gang's robbery of the Lemoyne National Bank in Saint Denis, Hosea and Abigail are sent to create a distraction. The plan unravels: Pinkerton agent Andrew Milton captures Hosea and drags him into the street as the heist goes loud.

With Dutch and the others pinned down inside, Milton executes Hosea in cold blood, in full view of the gang, as a warning. His death shatters the gang's last restraint and marks the true beginning of its collapse. For Arthur especially, losing Hosea is losing the one man who might have steered them all to safety.

Behind the scenes

Hosea was performed by Curzon Dobell through voice and motion capture. His warm, lived-in performance makes Hosea feel like the gang's true heart, which is exactly why his death lands so hard.

Hosea functions as the story's voice of reason: again and again he is proven right about the dangers Dutch ignores, so that his loss removes the one counterweight to Dutch's spiral.

Reception and legacy

Hosea is one of the most beloved supporting characters in Red Dead Redemption 2, frequently singled out for his warmth, wit and the quiet tragedy of his arc.

Within the story he is the great "what if": the man who, had he lived, might have pulled the gang back from the brink. His absence haunts everything that follows.
