Molly O'Shea
Molly O'Shea is a supporting character of Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018), set in 1899. A young Irishwoman from Dublin, she is the companion of Dutch van der Linde and lives in his tent, apart from the work of the camp. As the gang moves from camp to camp, Dutch grows distant and she quarrels with him and with Karen Jones. She disappears after the failed Saint Denis bank robbery. At Beaver Hollow she returns drunk and claims in front of everyone that she informed the Pinkertons, and Susan Grimshaw shoots her dead. Agent Andrew Milton later tells Arthur Morgan that she never talked.
She is played by Penny O'Brien, an Irish actress.

Biography
Origins
The games give no date of birth for Molly. She is Irish and comes from Dublin. Her family background is known only from what she claims, as reported by an official guide (see Personality). When and how she joined the gang is not told; by 1899 she is the companion of Dutch van der Linde and shares his tent.
Red Dead Redemption 2 (1899)
Chapter 1: Colter
After the failed ferry robbery in Blackwater, the gang takes shelter in Colter, an abandoned mining town in the snow. In "Outlaws from the West", Dutch comes back from the Adler homestead with Sadie Adler and says he needs rest. Susan Grimshaw points him to his cabin and says that Molly will show him the way. Molly stays with Dutch for the rest of the chapter. The Red Dead Wiki also lists her in "Eastward Bound", the move down from the mountains to Horseshoe Overlook, above Valentine; the mission page does not name her.
Chapter 2: Horseshoe Overlook
In "Polite Society, Valentine Style", Arthur Morgan and Uncle take Karen Jones, Tilly Jackson and Mary-Beth Gaskill into Valentine. On the way, Tilly wonders whether they should have asked Molly along, and Karen mocks her airs (see Quotes). According to the character page of the Red Dead Wiki, Molly is in camp, in "A Quiet Time", when Lenny Summers tells Dutch and Arthur that Micah Bell has been arrested in Strawberry.
In "Who is Not Without Sin", Arthur brings Reverend Swanson back from Flatneck Station, unconscious and drunk, and carries him through the camp to his tent. Molly sees them arrive and remarks that she had been wondering when the reverend would turn up. Her camp scenes of the chapter, including her dance with Dutch at the party for Sean MacGuire's return, are covered under Relationships. At the end of the chapter, the gang leaves Horseshoe Overlook for Clemens Point, on Flat Iron Lake in Lemoyne.
Chapter 3: Clemens Point
At Clemens Point, Molly and Dutch argue more and more often (see Relationships). "An Honest Mistake", which the Red Dead Wiki credits to Molly and Uncle as mission givers, opens with Molly calling Arthur over to talk about Dutch. According to the character page, she asks Arthur how Dutch seems to him, says that she really loves him and starts to recall his saying that loyalty is everything. Uncle interrupts with a tip about a supply wagon he believes is unguarded, and Arthur leaves with him, Charles Smith and Bill Williamson.
"Blessed are the Peacemakers" opens at Clemens Point as Arthur greets Micah. Arthur asks Molly where Dutch is. She waves him off and keeps walking. The Red Dead Wiki also lists her in "Blood Feuds, Ancient and Modern", in which the men ride to Braithwaite Manor to find Jack Marston; she is not among the riders, and the mission page does not name her. The next morning, in "The Battle of Shady Belle", the Pinkerton agents Andrew Milton and Edgar Ross come to Clemens Point. Milton offers the others three days to disappear if Dutch gives himself up. The gang refuses and leaves for Shady Belle, an abandoned plantation house near Saint Denis that Arthur and John Marston clear of Lemoyne Raiders.
When the caravan reaches Shady Belle, Dutch asks Susan and Simon Pearson to set up the camp and tells Arthur to ride with him. Molly calls out to Dutch and asks him for a word. Dutch tells her not now and rides off with Arthur. On the road to Saint Denis, he complains to Arthur that she wants to talk when he has so much going on, and says he has far more important things to worry about than her.
Chapter 4: Saint Denis
At Shady Belle, Molly keeps away from Dutch and from most of the camp; her camp scenes of the chapter, among them the party after Jack's return from Angelo Bronte's mansion and Karen's attempt to talk to her on the dock, are covered under Relationships. In "Horsemen, Apocalypses", the O'Driscolls send Kieran Duffy's mutilated body into the camp on a horse and attack Shady Belle. Molly takes no part in the fighting. As with the other members who stay out of the fight, the mission fails if she is killed. After the battle, she talks to Arthur about Kieran's and Sean's deaths (see Relationships).
Molly is one of the members who take no part in "Banking, The Old American Art", the robbery of the Saint Denis bank. The job fails. Hosea Matthews and Lenny are killed. John is arrested. Dutch, Arthur, Micah, Bill and Javier Escuella escape on a ship and end up on the island of Guarma. Molly's camp scenes stop for good after the robbery.
Chapter 5: Guarma
The survivors of Guarma rejoin the gang at Lakay, in the bayou, and the Pinkertons attack the camp in "Fleeting Joy". Afterwards, Arthur can ask the others where Molly is; she has been missing since the bank job. According to the character page of the Red Dead Wiki, several members, among them Susan, worry about her absence. Dutch decides that the gang must move north. In "That's Murfree Country", Arthur and Charles clear a cave at Beaver Hollow, in Roanoke Ridge, of the Murfree Brood, and the gang settles there.
While the new camp is being set up, Uncle arrives with Molly, who is drunk; according to the Red Dead Wiki, he says he found her in Saint Denis. In front of the gang, she berates Dutch for ignoring her. According to the character page, she says she loved him and mockingly calls him the Lord God almighty; Dutch points out that she is drunk and tells her to calm down. She then claims that she told the Pinkertons about the Saint Denis bank job, hoping, according to the same page, that Milton and Ross would kill Dutch. Dutch draws his revolver to kill her. Arthur tries to stop him; the character page has him call Molly a fool who is not worth Dutch's time. Before Dutch can fire, Susan shoots Molly in the stomach with a shotgun and kills her.
Susan tells Arthur that Molly knew the rules. She orders Bill and Pearson to burn the body. The killing closes the fifth chapter, and completing that chapter unlocks the trophy titled No Traitors. Karen turns on Susan right after the shooting (see Relationships).
Chapter 6: Beaver Hollow
In "Red Dead Redemption", the last mission of the chapter, Arthur and Sadie go to Van Horn to free Abigail Marston, held by Milton. Milton holds Arthur at gunpoint and says that not every member of the gang had his scruples, then names Micah. Arthur asks whether he means Molly. Milton answers that the Pinkertons questioned Molly a couple of times, that she never said a word and that they had to let her go. Micah, he says, was picked up when the gang came back from the Caribbean and has worked for them ever since. Abigail then shoots Milton.
Back at Beaver Hollow, Arthur tells the gang that Micah is the informant. In the two endings in which Arthur goes back for the money, he tells Dutch, during his confrontation with Micah, that the traitor is Micah and not Molly. With low honor, he says it after Micah has stabbed him in the chest and Dutch has arrived and stopped Micah, and he clears Susan and Colm in the same breath.
Personality
Rockstar Games' official description of Molly, published in September 2018, reads: "A Dublin girl and the object of Dutch's affection, for now at least, Molly is too high-strung for a life on the run and it's all starting to take a toll on her."
A character page from an official guide, reproduced on the Red Dead Wiki, opens with the same sentence and goes further. It says that "She claims to be from a well-to-do Irish family who came over to America on a romantic whim in search of adventure and excitement." It adds that Molly found that excitement in Dutch van der Linde "but wants more than he can, or is prepared to, give her." It ends: "She considers herself a few cuts above the other gang members, which hasn't won her many supporters in camp."
She is the only woman of the camp who does no chores. According to the Red Dead Wiki, the other women envy her that exemption. When Arthur suggests she help them clean the camp, she replies that she is nobody's servant girl. She spends much of her time in Dutch's tent, putting on make-up, looking at herself in a small mirror or writing. As the story goes on she keeps more and more to herself, and when Arthur tries to talk to her she tells him she wants to be left alone or that she is poor company. At Shady Belle she walks up and down the dock, muttering that she has been lied to and that the camp laughs at her, and she tells Arthur to go away if he comes near. According to the Red Dead Wiki's character page, she sometimes shouts at him that he and the others turned Dutch against her.
In her own words
At Colter, when Arthur asks whether she would like to stay with the others for company, she refuses; the Red Dead Wiki gives her answer as "Dutch is all the company I need." In Dutch's tent the player can read a poem in her hand, titled "Uaibhreach", Irish for proud or haughty. It is written as a villanelle, a fixed form of nineteen lines built on two refrains: "I was a girl until your call" and "I've nothing left. I gave you all." The poem recalls the Liffey, the river of Dublin, and speaks of Dutch's "parasites and lackeys" mocking a love they dare not see. Its last stanza has her sitting alone, writing and waiting for him.
Names
Susan Grimshaw and Karen Jones call her "Miss O'Shea". According to the Red Dead Wiki, she calls Dutch "Your Majesty".
Appearance
The guide's portrait shows a young woman with long, curly red hair, freckles and red lipstick, in a pale high-collared blouse, a fringed shawl with a red floral print and a dark skirt. In camp she wears more make-up than the other women, with eye-shadow and red lipstick. According to the Red Dead Wiki, her hair is half tied up, with the rest of her red curls falling down her back, and her usual outfit is a low-cut green corseted top with gold trim, a red skirt and white boots.
Relationships
Dutch van der Linde
Molly is Dutch's companion when the story begins. At Horseshoe Overlook he flirts with her in his tent; if Arthur makes fun of them, Dutch defends his feelings and suggests he join Bill, Javier and Charles at Smithfield's Saloon in Valentine. Another day Dutch asks Molly what he should compare her to. If Arthur is nearby, Dutch puts the question to him. Arthur replies that she is an idiot if she believes Dutch, and tells her to compare Dutch to that. Dutch tells Molly that Arthur has no poetry in him. At the party for Sean's return the two dance to Dutch's gramophone. Molly also asks him to go for a walk, and he hesitates.
At Clemens Point the tone changes: from the moment "An Honest Mistake" becomes available, her camp scenes with Dutch show neglect instead of affection, and according to the Red Dead Wiki she spends more and more time away from his tent. The camp hears them argue there. She accuses him of looking at another woman, and he calls her delusional. She reproaches him for not showing her any affection in weeks. Another time she asks why he has been so cold, and he says nothing is wrong and he is trying to rest. He calls her needy and selfish, while she says she only wants to help and that he will not talk to her. She also accuses him of flirting with Mary-Beth and says she fears she is getting too old for him. At Shady Belle he refuses her a word (see Biography). At the party for Jack's return she rants at him, drunk, that he has ruined her life. Dutch answers that he sees things differently, and she walks off, telling him to leave her alone. Arthur can then remark to Dutch on her bitter mood.
Arthur Morgan
Molly and Arthur speak little. When her pocket mirror breaks, she asks him whether her grandmother was right that it brings seven years of bad luck, and asks him for a new one. He can find one in a cabin at Martha's Swain; this request is available in chapter 3 only, and in return she gives him a cigar. At the party for Jack's return he can ask her to join in, and she says she is not in the mood.
She tries to talk to him about Dutch at the start of "An Honest Mistake", and at Beaver Hollow he tries to stop Dutch from shooting her (see Biography).
Karen Jones
Karen is the woman Molly clashes with most. She mocks Molly's airs on the road to Valentine (see Biography). At Horseshoe Overlook Molly takes her to task over a remark Karen made earlier: she shouts that Karen is not as clever as she thinks and that Dutch loves her, Molly, very much. Karen stays noncommittal, Molly swears, and she leaves complaining about how unkind the other girls are.
At Clemens Point Molly demands to know what Karen has against her, and the quarrel turns physical. The Red Dead Wiki gives two versions of the blows. Its camp events page has Molly slap Karen and Karen punch her in the face. Karen's page has Karen slap Molly when Molly grabs her arm. Molly's own page places the fight at Shady Belle and adds that Karen threatens to kill her, Dutch or no Dutch, if she raises a hand again.
At Shady Belle Karen joins her on the dock. Molly tells her to stop laughing at her, and Karen replies that no one is. Molly then admits she has always believed herself better than everyone, and says the whole camp now either laughs at her or pities her, before walking off. When Arthur says Molly is losing it, Karen answers that she lost it months ago. Right after Molly's death, Karen turns on Susan. Susan says Molly broke the rules; Karen rejects that and calls her a murderer. According to the Red Dead Wiki, Karen's drinking gets worse after the death.
Susan Grimshaw
Susan runs the camp's work, which Molly refuses to share. At Clemens Point Susan warns Dutch that Molly is unhappy and that her temper could cause trouble; Dutch brushes the warning aside with a joke about arguing with young women. At Beaver Hollow Susan shoots her (see Biography).
Abigail Marston
At Clemens Point Molly comes to Abigail to complain about Dutch. Abigail says she understands how Molly feels, then tells her plainly that Dutch does not love her the way she wants to be loved, and that she does not want to see her make a fool of herself. According to the Red Dead Wiki, she calls Molly sweet but not stupid and tells her to take care of herself. Molly denies it and leaves upset. Arthur then remarks to Abigail that Molly is losing her grip.
Tilly Jackson
At Horseshoe Overlook Molly stops by while Tilly is working. When Tilly asks for help, Molly excuses herself on the grounds that she is in love, and Tilly tells her to pitch in or move along. If Arthur comes too close, Molly tells him the conversation is private. After Molly's death, according to the Red Dead Wiki, Tilly shows little sympathy and believes Molly got what she deserved.
Mary-Beth Gaskill
At the party for Sean's return, while Uncle, Karen and Sean sing at the poker table, Dutch and Mary-Beth try to persuade Molly to join in. At Clemens Point Molly accuses Dutch of flirting with Mary-Beth (see Dutch van der Linde). After Molly's death, Mary-Beth tells Tilly she cannot get over it; according to the Red Dead Wiki, she adds that Molly was simply a fool in love who would say anything. The wiki names Mary-Beth and Karen as the members most shaken by the death.
Sean MacGuire
Sean, like Molly, is Irish. At Horseshoe Overlook he sits by her and says they are both far from home; she agrees. He asks what she thinks of him. She claims to have no real opinion, and he leaves laughing, saying her stuck-up looks tell him otherwise. According to the Red Dead Wiki, he once calls her a West Briton, a term for an Irish person seen as too fond of England. After his death and Kieran's, she speaks to Arthur about both (see Kieran Duffy).
Kieran Duffy
After Kieran's death in "Horsemen, Apocalypses", Molly talks to Arthur about it, about Sean's death and about the fact that Dutch is not speaking to her. According to the Red Dead Wiki, she is visibly distraught and asks him how any of this can be all right.
Uncle
Uncle interrupts her talk with Arthur in "An Honest Mistake" and brings her back drunk to Beaver Hollow (see Biography).
Micah Bell
Micah names Molly, with Reverend Swanson, among the members who contribute nothing and should be cut loose. He is the real informer (see Biography).
Andrew Milton
Milton clears her at Van Horn (see Biography). According to the Red Dead Wiki, she left the Pinkertons with more questions than answers.
Orville Swanson
She remarks on his drunken return in "Who is Not Without Sin" (see Biography). Micah lumps the two of them together among the members he wants cut loose (see Micah Bell).

Camp life
At Colter Molly lodges with Dutch in his cabin, and at Horseshoe Overlook and Clemens Point she lives in his tent. According to the Red Dead Wiki's page on Reverend Swanson, she, Swanson and Simon Pearson are the only gang members never shown committing, planning or taking part in a crime.

Development and performance
Casting
Molly is played by Penny O'Brien, an Irish actress from County Wicklow whose full name, according to the Red Dead Wiki, is Penelope Jane O'Brien. She is a 2012 graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. The Red Dead Wiki says she was cast as both the voice and the motion capture performer for Molly. In an article published by the academy on April 9, 2019, she said it was her first motion capture job, as it was for many other actors on the game.
According to Wikipedia's list of the game's characters, which cites two interviews of September 2019 (Bionic Buzz and The Nerd Soapbox), her audition took place on Saint Patrick's Day 2015. According to Wikipedia's summary of a Long Beach Comic Con panel on September 1, 2019, she was asked to audition with a really Irish accent and personality, and she had not played the first game but watched videos of it once she got the part. She told The Nerd Soapbox that she worked on the game for about three years. She told the academy that Molly's absence from the first game let her build the character from scratch.
Shooting and performance
In the April 2019 academy article, O'Brien described a production kept secret, in which the actors did not get the full script until shortly before the shoot. It took her almost a year of work to feel she was discovering Molly. She credited the director Rod Edge, the game's motion capture director, as "amazing at pulling a primal-like performance out of an actor", and said the cast was free to rework anything that felt out of character. She called Molly "a very desperate character set in very extreme circumstances".
At the Long Beach panel, as summarized by Wikipedia, she explained that before one of Molly's arguments with Dutch the director spoke to each actor separately about their character's motives without telling the other, and that Benjamin Byron Davis's in-character indifference frustrated her all the more. She said Molly finds no redemption: she had left Ireland to escape its hardships, and tying herself to Dutch cost her that chance. Speaking to The Nerd Soapbox, she said she played Molly's final scene as a cry for help and a plea for Dutch's attention.
Interviews
In a GamesRadar+ feature by Rachel Weber, published on March 7, 2019, O'Brien said that she spent much of the shoot with Benjamin Byron Davis, who plays Dutch, and that their friendship has lasted: "some jokes that were made while we were in our tent that we'll still make together when we're sitting at dinner. I'm always perpetually darning his socks." One of her best memories was catching up with Jo Armeniox, who plays Karen Jones, in the green room before a scene in which Armeniox had to slap her in the face twice.
On January 15, 2021, O'Brien, Roger Clark (Arthur) and Michael Mellamphy (Sean MacGuire) appeared in "Irish Redemption: An Irish Invasion of Video Games", an online panel of Origin Theatre's First Irish Festival, reported by Cian Maher for TheGamer on January 20, 2021. O'Brien said she had worked with Origin Theatre before, and that when she was cast she immediately spotted Clark as "one of those Irish theatre lads". She said the humor of the writing was easy to play because it is something they grew up with, "the lyricism and musicality". She and Mellamphy both recalled a cutscene in which Molly looks down her nose at Sean.
Cut content
The Red Dead Wiki lists unused material for Molly in the game files. She has an outfit made for "The Gilded Cage", the party at the mayor's mansion in Saint Denis, and cut dialogue tied to that mission, which suggests she was once meant to take part in it. The files also hold two unused shirts, a torso, a hairstyle, a coat and two blankets, as well as generic lines for riding a horse. Instead of having her body burned, the developers first planned to bury her in an unmarked grave near Beaver Hollow; the grave is still in the files, under the map, and does not bear her name. Concept art published by the wiki shows Molly with Charles and Javier.
Reception
Critical commentary
In Game Informer's staff ranking of the 24 members of the Van der Linde gang, published on December 27, 2018, Molly comes 18th. The staff wrote that she gets little time as anything more than "someone begging for Dutch's approval and failing to find it". They added that the "stomach-churning scene" in which she drunkenly claims a betrayal she probably did not commit and is shot by Susan Grimshaw "is one of the game's biggest moments".
The German site MeinMMO included her in a list of the five most tragic characters of the gang, by Tarek Zehrer, published on May 30, 2021. She also figures in the composite of 23 gang members' official art designs that illustrates Wikipedia's list of the game's characters, in the front row between Sadie Adler and Mary-Beth Gaskill.
