This guide lists it eighteenth of the chapter's 24 missions, which can be played in a different order.

Story

At the door

Arthur rides to Chadwick Farm, the address given in Mary's letter, and knocks at the door. A woman opens it with a revolver in hand. "Yes?", she asks. Arthur apologizes: "Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you ma'am. Is Mrs. Linton in?" She goes back inside to tell Mary: "Mrs. Linton, a caller for you."

The woman is Miss Chadwick. Mary rents a room at the farm.

Mary

"Hello, Arthur", says Mary. Arthur struggles to find his words. Mary says she heard that he and his friends were around. Arthur asks where her husband is, without naming him. "Died", she answers. It happened a while ago, of pneumonia. Arthur says he is sorry to hear it.

Arthur then asks whether, now that she is a widow, she has come looking for him. "No, ain't like that, Arthur", she answers. She tells him that she and her family need his help. Arthur reminds her that this is the family that always looked down on him.

Mary explains that the problem is her little brother, Jamie, and that he has broken their father's heart. After Arthur's reply, she tells him: "Don't make me beg you, Arthur." Arthur answers: "My money, my life, me... I wasn't good enough."

Jamie and the Chelonians

Mary apologizes and tells him that Jamie has joined the Chelonians, "that strange religious order". "Good for him", says Arthur. Mary insists: "They're quite mad, Arthur. They'll kill him. You're the only person he'd listen to."

Mary apologizes again. She tells him that she understands if he does not want to help her, and that she thinks of him often. "A long time ago now", Arthur answers. Mary begs him once more.

Arthur answers: "I say let Jamie live Jamie's life, and not the... nightmare that his daddy dreamed up for him." Mary pleads: "Jamie's so innocent, Arthur. Please, Arthur. Will you help me?" The player then chooses Arthur's answer.

If Arthur agrees

"Where is he?", Arthur asks. Mary answers: "Somewhere out near Carmody Dell, I think. The rancher there said he'd... seen him around the Cumberland Forest." She asks Arthur to bring Jamie to her at the station if he finds him. "I'll see what I can do", says Arthur.

The search continues in We Loved Once and True III, which starts in Cumberland Forest.

Choices and variants

Mary's request

  • If Arthur agrees, Mary tells him where to look for Jamie, and We Loved Once and True III becomes available.
  • If Arthur refuses, he tells Mary that, given their past and the way things ended between them, she needs to find someone else. Mary says she understands, tells him that she misses him and asks him to take care of himself. Part III is then never offered.
  • If the player lets the timer run out without answering, Mary storms back inside, saying that Arthur has not changed much. Part III is lost in this case too.

Later consequences

  • Mary writes to Arthur again in chapter 4, and the opening of her letter depends on this choice. If he refused, she writes that he was perhaps right and that the situation with Jamie has worked itself out.
  • Mary's second letter leads to her second strand of missions, "Fatherhood and Other Dreams", in Saint Denis.

Trivia
  • Arthur does not name Mary's late husband in the conversation. He was Barry Linton.
  • Arthur knew Jamie when he was engaged to Mary, and he taught him to ride.
  • If Arthur is wearing a hat when he arrives, he takes it off and holds it during the conversation, then puts it back on at the end.
  • Two of Mary's lines from this scene come back to Arthur in "A Fork in the Road", in chapter 5, after a doctor in Saint Denis tells him he has tuberculosis: with low honor, her plea quoted above; with high honor, her words saying she thinks of him often.
  • At Chadwick Farm, Mary wears her hair in a low braid; in her later appearances she wears it in a low bun.
