Story

Sean at the oil wagon

On his way to the wagon, Arthur finds Sean shooting at bottles and missing them one after another. Arthur: "Well, at least it ain't your job." When Sean tells him to shut up, he adds: "Yeah, your job's starting the fights... it ain't winning them." Sean complains that Arthur has no time for him: he tried to find him work, but Arthur cuts jobs with other folks and "your boy Sean doesn't get a look in." Arthur answers that he does not want to get shot.

Sean reloads and warns him to sleep with his eyes open. Arthur: "Yeah, well you're gonna sleep with your chest open if you ain't careful, boy." Sean laughs, tells Arthur he loves him and dares him to take a shot. Arthur draws, hits a bottle and says: "Grow up."

As they walk to the wagon, Sean asks to come on the raid. Arthur asks whether Marston told him, then answers: "It ain't a big show... I need calmness. If I take you, I might as well bring Micah along." Sean calls Micah an "oily turd" and warns Arthur not to make the comparison again. Arthur: "Fair enough."

Waiting for nightfall

If Arthur reaches the wagon before dark, Sean goes on: Arthur feels threatened by his "youthful vigor". It is "the changing of the guard", and Arthur is "toast, old man." Asked what that makes him, Sean answers: "I'm the future, in all its glory!" Arthur wishes him good luck, tells him to shut up and lies down to rest. When night falls, he throws a pebble at Sean: "Wake up, you lazy sod."

John and Charles arrive

John arrives with Charles and asks Sean what he is doing there. Sean is coming on the job. John reminds him that he said no; Sean answers that Arthur says yes, and that it is his party. Sean: "Me and the big cheeses, love it. Can't wait to slit some bastard's throat." John asks Arthur whether he is sure; Arthur: "No... Are we ready?" John confirms that the train is due through that night, Charles says he is ready, and Arthur takes the reins: "Gentlemen. Let's go earn some money."

The ride to the tracks

Charles checks that the horses are untethered, so that they will follow behind. Arthur asks John, "Wolf Man", whether he has found a good spot. John tells him to follow the trail southwest to a place that is remote but still gives the crew enough time to see the wagon. Arthur: "They see this blocking the tracks, they'll stop soon enough." John adds that the train picks up a new team of guards at the state line, so there should not be many guns to deal with.

Sean complains that he disappears for a couple of weeks and gets cut out of the action. John: "Just the action that requires a brain." Sean mocks John for having had his feet up "playing sick", fondling his new scar, and warns him not to get scratched by a squirrel. Charles: "Why do you have to speak so much? It's... incessant." Sean: "'Cause I've still got some blood in me veins. You old bastards have forgotten how to live."

John: "I blame you two for rescuing him." Arthur: "Far too much trouble for what we got out of it." Sean boasts that it takes a whole army of bounty hunters to bring in Sean MacGuire (Arthur, Charles and Javier freed him from them in The First Shall Be Last), and starts on what his da used to say. John: "Not the da, please!" Charles and Arthur join in. Sean gives up and names the three of them: "Sulky, Angry, Scar Face. A right barrel of laughs." On the way, John tells Arthur to bear left at a fork, toward Rhodes.

Sean asks whether the plan is to block the tracks with the wagon, then jump them. Arthur gives out the tasks: Charles deals with the engineer; John secures the passenger car fast and collects the passengers' money; Sean, whom he calls Little Mr. MacGuire, goes for the baggage car and grabs any valuables. Arthur runs point, watches for outriders and the law, and helps where he can. Sean calls it cherry picking. John points out that they will be in the middle of nowhere, so word will take a while to reach the law, but they should still move quickly.

Blocking the train

At the crossing, John has Arthur stop the wagon across the tracks: "Remember, these are innocent folks. We handle this right, nobody needs to die here." The men unhitch the horses. Arthur sends the others into cover: "Mr. Marston... Mr. Smith... Mr. MacGuire... get over there. When she slows, board her." Asked what he will do, he answers: "I'm gonna make sure she slows."

Arthur climbs onto the oil tank and covers his face as the train comes into view: "Here she comes..." The train stops in front of the wagon. The engineer gets out: "What's going on here?" Charles knocks him out: "Nothing good..." Sean knocks out a second man from the train: "All yours, captain, I'll go on ahead."

Robbing the passengers

Arthur and John enter the first passenger car. John: "Everybody stay calm and nobody'll get shot!" He goes down the car with a sack, demanding money and valuables, and says they will not leave until the bag is full. When a passenger refuses, John hands him over to Arthur, whose recurring task is to beat the passenger until he pays. The first to refuse is a man named Thomas; another passenger begs him to hand it over, and he does. A woman tells them that people like them make her sick; Arthur says he will count to three, gets to two, then: "Sick is better than dead, lady."

In the next car, John announces: "Ladies and gentlemen, this is a robbery!" Sean comes in and asks whether they need him; Arthur sends him to look for the baggage car. When another passenger says they will not get a cent from him, John answers: "Let me hand you over to my friend, then." In the following car, John says he can handle the rest and sends Arthur to check on Sean.

The baggage car

Arthur finds Sean outside the baggage car. Sean: "Found the baggage car." Arthur: "For Christ's sake. You ain't even taken a look yet?" When the door opens, an armed guard attacks Sean and hits him on the head. Arthur kills the guard, then the other guards who appear. The game teaches manual marking in Dead Eye during this fight: while aiming, the player tags each target, then fires.

Sean gets back on his feet. Arthur: "This time I'll look and you provide the cover." Sean: "I'll try my best, brother, but... I'm seeing double here." Arthur: "That gives you twice the chance of hitting someone." Sean says he is going to have a right old lump on his head; Arthur: "Least you ain't got a hole in it." While Arthur empties the cabinets and chests, Sean keeps watch and spots tennis rackets: "Posh bastards."

The lawmen

Sean urges Arthur to hurry, then calls out: "Arthur, we got a problem. There's two arseholes on horses." Since he sees only a pair, Arthur tells John and Charles to get ready. A lawman orders them off the train. Arthur shouts back: "There's only two of you, you fools... We got a whole lot less to lose. Why don't the two of you ride away? That way neither of you get killed." Sean reports a few more turning up. Arthur: "Me and my big mouth."

The lawmen give a last warning: "Last chance! Drop your weapons and get off the train!" Arthur answers with a gunshot. More lawmen come out of the trees, and others ride in behind them. Charles: "Get rid of them, quick, so we can make a run for it!" After a short firefight, the four mount up. John: "Come on, boys, let's get the hell out of here!" They ride off with the law behind them until they lose it.

Splitting the take

Once they are clear, Sean is delighted: "Whoa! That was fun, boys, real fun!" Arthur tells him to shut up and hands each man his cut. Sean: "Gotta be a hundred dollars here, very nice." Arthur: "And you weren't even invited." When John asks what now, Arthur answers: "We still need a real big take... enough for us to get out of here."

John: "Was that a set up? Law turned up real fast." Arthur: "I don't know. I don't think so. I'm starting to get nervous." Charles wonders whether they were followed from Blackwater. Arthur: "They found me already near Horseshoe, but... I think this lot was just locals." John says he will head into Valentine to see if he can get something started. Arthur agrees and tells them all to go it alone for now: "You know the deal... don't be followed." Sean: "Ah, course not, boss."

In the newspapers

The robbery makes the papers in the Blackwater Ledger (No. 63), the New Hanover Gazette (No. 28) and the Saint Denis Times (No. 44), under the title "Who Are Scarlett Meadows Bandits?". The article reports that outlaws used an oil wagon on the tracks to stop the train near the Lemoyne border, and that lawmen, "having been tipped off to the robbery", arrived on the scene. It quotes a passenger, Gertrude Bambach, and Sheriff Thomkins: "The supply cars have been looted. Men are dead. This region's problems with lawlessness have returned."

Mission failure

The mission fails if the player:

  • assaults, kills or abandons John, Charles or Sean, or lets one of them be killed;
  • destroys or disables the oil wagon;
  • takes too long to reach the tracks;
  • kills a passenger during the robbery;
  • kills or abandons his horse;
  • dies.

Deaths

  • The train guards in the baggage car, killed by Arthur.
  • Several lawmen, killed by Arthur, John, Sean and Charles.
Choices and variants

Arriving before or after dark

The scene with Sean about Arthur feeling threatened, and the rest until nightfall, only plays if Arthur reaches the wagon before dark. Otherwise John and Charles arrive right after the talk about Micah.

The engineer and the passengers

  • If Arthur kills the engineer instead of letting Charles knock him out, Charles asks him what that was for and tells him to keep his head.
  • If Arthur kills a passenger who refuses to pay, John tells the others that this is what they will get if they do not listen, and the mission fails.
  • If Arthur is slow to mount up after the fight, John calls on him to hurry.
Gold Medal objectives
Objectives to complete for the Gold Medal.
#Objective
1Kill all the train guards before Sean fires a shot.
2Clear the baggage car of loot.
3Escape the law within 1 minute and 30 seconds.
4Get 10 kills in Dead Eye.
5Complete the mission without using any health items.

During the escape, riding northwest along the railroad and crossing from Lemoyne back into New Hanover ends the pursuit, which makes the third objective easy.

Trivia
  • Bill Williamson and Lenny Summers appear in scenes of this mission in the game's second trailer. Neither takes part in the released game.
  • When Arthur tells Charles that he has already been found near Horseshoe Overlook, he refers to the meeting with the Pinkertons in A Fisher of Men; the line plays even if that mission has not been completed yet.
  • In the first cutscene, Sean reloads his Cattleman Revolver by swinging the cylinder out to the side, which that single-action design does not allow.
  • If the player carries a different long gun on the shoulder, it switches to a Carbine Repeater in the cutscene where the train stops.
  • Driving too close to the road sign on the way to the tracks can knock John off the wagon; reversing to line Charles up with it does the same to him.
  • Although Arthur tells everyone to split up, Sean, Charles and John ride back to Horseshoe Overlook together after the mission.
  • Sean is unavailable in camp while this mission is waiting to be played.
  • Two glitches can spoil the mission: guards who fall on or against the baggage car chests can block the loot (and the Gold Medal), and the train can sometimes arrive at the crossing too fast for the wagon to be parked in time.
