Story
In Dutch's tent
Arthur finds Dutch in his tent with Molly O'Shea. Dutch says that the gang is finally getting back on its feet. Arthur asks whether a buyer has been found for the bonds they stole; Dutch answers that Hosea is working on it. To "When we heading west?", Dutch replies: "Soon. I don't know."
Arthur says that the whole world has changed, that people no longer want folk like them, and that they are being hunted. Molly tells him: "Trust Dutch, Mr. Morgan. You have to."
Lenny's news
Lenny arrives out of breath: "Dutch... Arthur... They got Micah." Micah has been arrested for murder in Strawberry. Lenny says that they nearly lynched him too, that Micah is in the sheriff's office in Strawberry, and that there is talk of hanging him. Arthur: "Here's hoping."
Dutch calls Micah "a fine man" and asks Arthur to go. Arthur refuses at first, then gives in when Dutch says his own face will be "all over West Elizabeth". Arthur notices that Lenny does not seem okay, and Dutch adds: "You take that kid into town. Valentine, not Strawberry... get him drunk... and Arthur... no crazy business." "I've given that up", Arthur answers. He tells Dutch he will deal with Micah, but cannot drop everything.
The ride to Valentine
On the way, Lenny tells his story. Micah and he were supposed to scout ahead for the gang. Micah kept telling him "you worry too much, kid" and was "half soaked" before they even reached Strawberry, which is supposed to be a dry town. They met some men, one of whom Micah knew, and drank some more. Lenny cannot say how the shooting started: "It happened like the strike of a match." The law was on them fast, and he only just got away.
Lenny wants to go with Arthur to get Micah out; Arthur tells him to leave it to him. They will have a couple of drinks to settle him down, then head back. Arthur warns him that he and some of the other boys got into a fight the last time they were in Valentine, in Americans at Rest: "Nothing big, we kept it clean."
Two beers and Jeb
At Smithfield's Saloon, Lenny asks: "Just one or two... right, Arthur?" Arthur orders two beers. The bartender says he does not want any trouble; Arthur answers that he was defending himself. The bartender mentions Tommy, the man Arthur beat in the street outside; Arthur says Tommy will be fine and buys the bartender a drink.
A patron named Jeb starts repeating everything they say: "I seen a lot of crazy, crazy stuff." When Arthur tells him to shut up, Jeb calls them dull. The player can charm him, intimidate him or hit him to make him leave; if the player does nothing, the charm option fills up by itself. With the charm option, Arthur calls him "a charming fellow", and Jeb walks off: "Ain't no pleasing some folk. I was, just... trying to be friendly."
Lenny goes missing
The two men keep drinking, and Lenny disappears. Arthur asks the customers where his friend went and finds him on the upstairs landing, trying to balance a glass on his forehead. The glass falls over the railing and smashes on the floor below. Lenny then asks him: "Well, why ain't you never married?" "No one would have me", Arthur starts, but Lenny has already slipped away again.
This time Arthur finds him downstairs, standing on the bar counter and fending off two men. "Leave the kid alone, you goddamn animals", Arthur tells them. One of the men squares up to him, but instead of a fight, Arthur ends up dancing in a line with the customers.
Every man is Lenny
Arthur relieves himself outside and comes back to look for Lenny a third time. By now he is so drunk that he sees Lenny's face on every patron, and the on-screen prompts are scrambled. He greets strangers as Lenny. The bartender suggests he switch to water; one man answers "I'm Clyde. You got the wrong feller", another "Do I look like a Lenny to you?"
The real Lenny finally finds him: "Arthur, Arthur, what are you doing?" The two men trade slaps, then go back to the bar. "You're a good friend to me, Arthur", says Lenny. "Shut up... Cheers", Arthur answers.
The trough
Jeb comes back and takes Arthur's drink out of his hand. "Not you again", says Arthur, and grabs him by the collar. The next scene shows Arthur and Lenny outside, holding Jeb over a water trough. The player can let him go, start pushing his head under the water without finishing, or hold him under until he passes out. In the first two cases Jeb breaks free and runs for the law; in the third, Arthur leaves him unconscious on the ground beside the trough, where the law finds him.
A man leads the deputies to them ("This way... this way..."). One deputy grabs Lenny: "I got him... I got the bastard." Arthur runs, shouting "Never! You'll never take me alive!" The player then has to steer him through the streets: if he hits a barrel or trips over a fence, he falls and is arrested too.
The morning after
If Arthur escapes, he wakes up in the grass south of the camp, near Flatneck Station, very hungover: "Oh, you moron, Morgan... You moron... not again." He vomits into the grass, then rides back to camp, where Lenny is waiting.
If Arthur is caught, he and Lenny wake up in the Valentine jail. They post bail, stop outside the sheriff's office while Lenny vomits into the street, and ride back to camp separately.
This mission unlocks the rescue of Micah, Blessed are the Meek?.
Choices and variants
The six endings
The ending depends on what Arthur does with Jeb at the trough and on whether he gets away from the deputies.
| At the trough | Arthur escapes | Arthur is arrested |
|---|---|---|
| Lets Jeb go | Wakes up south of the camp; at camp, Lenny says he does not know what happened during their escape | Both are charged with assault, post bail and go back to camp separately |
| Tries to drown him, without finishing | At camp, Lenny says he was arrested and had to post bail for assault, and compares the night to what Micah did in Strawberry | Both are charged with assault, post bail and go back to camp separately |
| Holds him under until he passes out | At camp, Lenny says he was arrested for attempted murder and had to post bail, and compares the night to what Micah did in Strawberry | Both are charged with attempted murder, post bail and go back to camp separately |
The wrong door
Upstairs, Arthur can open a door on a prostitute and her client. While he is only a little drunk, during the first or second search, he closes the door with an apology and laughs to himself. During the third search, he sees Lenny's face on both of them; all three scream and Arthur slams the door. This is one of the few scenes in the game with full nudity.
Mission failure
The mission fails if the player:
- assaults, kills or abandons Lenny, or lets him be killed;
- is knocked out by Lenny;
- leaves Valentine or the saloon area;
- alerts the law;
- kills or abandons the horse;
- dies.
If Arthur walks too far from the saloon, he trips and finds himself back at the saloon.
Gold Medal objectives
| # | Objective |
|---|---|
| 1 | Try to make amends with an old rival. |
| 2 | Catch Lenny in the act. |
| 3 | Don't get arrested. |
The old rival is Tommy, whom Arthur beat in Americans at Rest. After Lenny goes missing for the first time, Tommy sits eating alone at a table near the pillar with the cattle skull. Arthur has to talk to him four times; Tommy is gone after that.
"Catch Lenny in the act" is earned in the far room on the left of the stairs, during the third search; opening it earlier does not count.
To escape the deputies, keep running straight, turn right just past the alleyway and climb the fence. Avoid the pillars and everything else in the alleyway. The climb prompt is blurred and only becomes readable at the last second. Arthur waking up outdoors, not in jail, means the escape worked.

Trivia
- In an interview with Hayes Madsen published by Twinfinite on 19 February 2019, Roger Clark, who plays Arthur, said the saloon scene was shot over two or three days, in many short pieces, with editing meant to be more frantic than in the rest of the game to convey drunkenness.
- When Arthur is very drunk, the prompts scramble the names: Lenny becomes "Lemmy", "Lennie", "Lneny" or "ynneL", "Greet" becomes "Grate" or "teerG", and "Bartender" becomes "Bratedner".
- On the ride into Valentine, if Arthur provokes a passer-by until he turns hostile, Lenny draws his revolver and shoots him dead.
- The barber of Smithfield's Saloon is absent during the mission. The deputy who lets Arthur and Lenny out of the cell appears only in this mission.
- After the mission, the Valentine sheriff's office is locked, and Arthur can become wanted for trespassing if he tries to get in. The sheriff may then carry a Bolt Action Rifle, one way of getting that rifle early in Chapter 2.
- After the mission, the Valentine gunsmith can mention the line of dancing patrons at Smithfield's.
- Lenny's camp events start after this mission.
- If this mission has been played before Who is Not Without Sin, Arthur compares Swanson stuck on the tracks to his own night with Lenny, and, if he escaped the deputies, remembers waking up at the same station. Hosea's first lines in Exit Pursued by a Bruised Ego also change depending on whether this mission has been played.
- Jeb appears again in 1907, in the epilogue mission Gainful Employment, where he harasses Sadie Adler.
